Salt and pepper, cookies and cream, summer and Riesling: some things are good by themselves but are even better together.

This is my favourite value-for-money Riesling. For less than thirty bucks you can purchase this baby from almost any bottle shop. It’s the perfect accompaniment to barbecued prawns and Thai-style salads or anything else you find yourself hoofing into under the summer sun.

If you’re used to sweeter white wines, this one may not be to your taste. Due to Pewsey Vale’s high altitude and cool climate, the ripening period extends into autumn and you can taste the beautiful crisp, mineral acidity that lingers with each sip. There’s a little floral on the nose, but the palate’s all lemon rind and lime juice with a big acidic kick that says ‘keep me!’ If you have the patience, purchase a case and let it sit. It’ll be worth it.
