You can feel the love alright. With the balmy night sky above, palm trees embracing, fresh flowers and Allsorts cacti on the garden-setting tables, Astro Turf underfoot, and the broadest genuine welcoming smiles behind the bar, Love on Top brings back to Kings Cross love, passion and magic.

The flavours of Asia – sambal, five spice, lychee, coriander, lime – are conjoured through the cocktail list to match the inspired food of Chef Kenny Kong (formerly China Doll): Shanghai Strip ($19); Beijing Mary ($18); HK Sour ($18); Tianjin Iced Tea ($18). Yet this cocktail lass was also otherwise impressed, with the offerings of wine by the glass and bottle, mostly sourced from small Australian family vineyards: Tinja Pinot Gris 2013 ($12 glass); Bath Rose 2011 ($9 glass); Tim Smith Grenache 2012 ($10 glass); Bay of Stones Shiraz 2012 ($8 glass).

Spied and ordered: bar food; delicious Dumplings; then an equally delicious blackboard special of Spanner crab zucchini flowers.

Duck. Double duck. Because you can never have enough: First Love – Five spice duck spring rolls, cucumber, spring onion, plum sauce; Big Love – Roasted five spiced duck with orange glaze followed. Masterstock complexity. Harmony of flavours. Diversity of textures. Sensational.

We couldn’t help chatting with the crew. We loved it alright!

We relaxed until closing and were the last to leave and THAT says it all…
