Guess who is going to be a guest judge – at, nonetheless, the World Class Bartender of the Year competition. Yes, you can get excited now!
The second round of the cocktail competition is next month in May, on the main beach of Noosa. So I decided during this month, that it was time to get in some cocktail judging practice. (Yes, it is a hard life – I hear you say) Practice came in the form of trying four cocktails from the reigning – World Class Bartender of the Year – champion, Tim Philips of Bulletin Place bar. My top marks went to this cocktail recipe for Golden Age Cooler. Based on whisky, of course. But I also really loved the tea and golden syrup combination. I thought this soothing blend also shouted Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi…

Golden Age Cooler
45ml Johnnie Walker Gold Label Rserved Blended Scotch Whisky
20ml Tim Philips’ Australian Breakfast Treacle
2 dashes Angostura bitters
45m Lapsang Souchong tea (steeped and chilled)
Trade Secret Ingredients:
Australian Breakfast tea
1/4 cup of golden syrup
1/4 cup of malt extract
Trade Secret Method:
Boil a cup of Australian Breakfast tea
Mix in 1/4 cup of golden syrup
Mix in 1/4 cup of malt extract
Cocktail Making Method:
Carefully measure and build all ingredients in a highball glass.
Add the Trade Secret.
Stir with a spoon and add ice to the top. Garnish with a lime wheel. Enjoy!
The Diageo Reserve World Class competition, along with the Diageo Alchemy Program is part of their commitment to the bartending community. And I reckon that’s got to be good news. End result: I’d say better drinks at bars for us.
