DO YOU – like me – confuse lust and love? LUST (as you might imagine) is my favourite of the 7 deadly sins.
Lust: a cocktail of gin, crème de cassis, pink grapefruit juice and a touch of passion fruit, is in my opinion the smoothest talker at new small bar Black Penny Surry Hills. “You’re wicked and you’re lazy?” No problem, they’re mixing a mash of raspberries, vodka and mint leaves; slipped down easily as you would require of Sloth. We also cheered for Sin City when on opening night, BAR FLY and her party friends tried to drink our way through the whole cocktail list. Notice I said tried. I’m also in lust with the locals-first philosophy; Black Penny sources its alcohol from a unique mixture of boutique, as well as larger producers such as Coopers, Young Henry’s, The Hills Cider Company and the Balmain Brewing company. Yet with a back bar art gallery behind the funky front corner street space providing a platform for local and emerging artists – perhaps this time it might really be LOVE.
Who created the cocktail list?
“The Seven Deadly Sins and The Lucky Seven concept was initially my own devious creation” says Black Penny owner Damian Dlugolecki “which was then honed, refined and twisted by our Bar Madame, Manager and overall Ninja Elizabeth Major. Formerly from Hugos, Liz has an innate skill for fusing left field flavours that not only taste delicious but pack a considerable (whip) punch.”
Why Black Penny?
“Having spent our formative years in both the hospitality and music industry we all somehow conformed, got a safe job and strayed away from our passion – which is people. The Penny literally dropped when we realized this, and then ultimately become the basis to our name.”
