Dinner at Restaurant 22 seemed an appropriate start for the Appetite for Excellence produce tour this year. As our Australian Young Chef Waiter and Restaurateur finalists await the awards announcement next Monday (20th August) night they’ve set off on a week long road trip, this year in New South Wales.
And why was the first dinner so appropriate? Chef and owner Jarryd Faint of Restaurant 22 is just 21 years of age – younger than many of the industry colleagues he fed on the first stop of their trip. Except perhaps Kah-wai Lo (more affectionately called Buddha) who’ll celebrate his 21st birthday at glass brasserie Sydney next Monday at the awards.
Accompanying the tour for the week, I popped my head into the Restaurant 22 kitchen. “Who’s the Chef” I asked. “We both are” was the answer as I also met Mike Leddy. Before our hearty Sunday pork roast the kitchen team dished up Pork Crackling, Whiskey-Roasted Pigs Ear as nibbles on the table then sumptious – help ourselves – platters. All good from start to sweet finish, my top pick of the night Morcilla (Black pudding) with caramelised apple – I could have devoured the whole platter, yum yum yum.
