Food and travelling, for me, go hand in hand. This October, I had planned to be overseas. Note the past tense. When I learnt at the launch for this year’s CRAVE SMH Sydney International Food Festival and World Chef Showcase that the focus this year would be on Italian cuisine, I started to have reservations about leaving Sydney. When I learnt who was coming, my travel plans were cancelled. The world is coming to Sydney.

“Italian food is everyone’s favourite. But what do we know about the latest trends in Italy? This is a chance to find out,” said Festival Director Joanna Savill.
At yesterday’s launch were faces you’ll know from Inside Cuisine and perhaps even television. Friends, Chefs: Giovanni Pilu, Alessandro Pavoni, Colin Fassnidge, David Thompson, Peter Kuruvita and Matt Moran.
The launch announced food heroes Massimo Bottura (Osteria Francescana No. 5 the World’s Best Restaurants list, Italy), Antonio Carluccio (food writer, television presenter), Tessa Kiros (author, Italy), Nick Lander (author, writer and restaurant consultant, London), Andrea Petrini (food writer, France), Roberto Petza (S;Apposentu a Casa Puddu; one-Michelin star, Sardinia), Jordi Roca (El Celler de Can Roca; three-Michelin stars, Spain), Christina Tosa (Momofuku Milk Bar, New York).
That is serious clout.
Perhaps the news of the international visitor that got me most excited was Ruth Reichl. I literally jumped and clapped my hands at the launch. I love her writing. I even love her tweets.
