Instructions from Tea Etiquette on the back of the tea menu state ” … Hold the saucer under your cup while you sip your tea (lest you should spill or dribble) … ” I should have paid attention, but I didn’t notice that side of the menu until too late.
My friend Kate Parry and I were indulging. High tea at the new Tea Salon on Level 4 Westfield Sydney was the perfect way for two friends, like us, to catch up. Yes we indulged indeed, because as well as the three tier tower of ribbon sandwiches, assorted sweeties and scones, we upgraded from the Classic High Tea, skipped the Sparkling High Tea and went straight for the Couture High Tea (which includes a flute of Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial). That’s us! We’re high class girls.
The Tea Salon by The Victoria Room is a perfect pink retreat on the fashion level of Westfield. That’s also us. We’re fashionable girls.

We chose from the “Top Ten Scones”: 1. Original 2. Date & Orange 3. Spiced Cinnamon & Raisin 4. Lemon, Pistachio & Currant 5. White Chocolate & Cranberry 6. Dark Chocolate Chip 7. Lavender 8. Rose 9. Cheddar & Thyme 10. Pumpkin & Ginger
Can you guess what we chose? It was a girls’ afternoon, after all. We chose one each; romantics that we are, Kate chose lavender and I chose rose. The middle tier seduced us with a dark chocolate cup with chocolate mouuse, cream & raspberries, a vanilla cupcake with fresh passionfruit topping, a fruit tartlet and a baked lemon cheescake – thankfully all in petite proportions. Delicious ribbon sandwiches were our base.
After we clinked glasses and drank our Champagne, chattered and caught up on news, I noticed the menu offers more than scones and high tea. There’s a lovely selection of mains including a twiced baked souffle and (one of my favourite treats) a Waldorf salad – the Tea Salon serves theirs with caramelised walnuts and with or without blue cheese. Sweeties include the queen of ice cream sundaes – the Knickerbocker Glory.
I know we’ll be back. Our only worry? Will we still be able to fit into the beautiful designer dresses on level 4?
