It had been a couple of years since I had been to Noumea. On that trip, I discovered a lovely family run traditional French restaurant : The Creperie Bretonne. So on my short stay in Noumea this week, I sought out the name, and booked my table, for my return visit.
As the name suggests this delightful eatery serves traditional Breton crepes – both savoury and sweet – as well as Val de Rance cider, and a bright list of aperitifs, wine and digestifs. It’s also easy on the pocket.
The choices are quite extensive from simple classic au beurre or a crepe with an egg on top, through various combinations with mushrooms, onions, ham, bechamel, cheese, tomato and creamed spinach to crepes with sweetbreads, smoked salmon, seafood or venison.
And there’s a whole page of dessert crepes from the childhood delight of sugar crepes to Belle Helene, chocolate and Grand Marnier.

My savoury selection was not on the menu, and was the special of the night – with the flavoursome filling of potato, Emmental cheese and lardons of ham. Of course I washed this down with traditional brut cider.
The sweet special of local strawberries from Piata was probably more than I needed for nourishment of the body, yet was lovely sweet nourishment for the soul.
Service was prompt, friendly and helpful – and there was enough English spoken to help me feel right at home. Merci beaucoup.
