On a recent trip to Perth to watch Scottish football team Celtic FC I decided to check out the local restaurant scene. On the recommendation of a friend (our lunch date and also a chef in Perth) my partner and I decided to visit the head chef Michael Illari’s restaurant. The Silver Spoon. Going straight from the airport, we arrived at the Silver Spoon to a beautiful and relaxed restaurant, with attentive staff and enjoyed a glass of wine while we perused the menu. On talking with our friend, we decided to let the chef organise our menu to get the best selection of what was on offer, and ended up with a 5 course degustation menu. Utterly divine.
For our first course, we received a Carpaccio of Beef Fillet served on Beef Tartare, with Mojo Picante, Soft Boiled Quail Eggs and Watercress. This was fabulous and a great way to start a meal. Light, delicious, and well-seasoned the texture differences between the meat were fantastic, the carpaccio was sliced perfectly and the dish was brought together through the quail egg (perfectly cooked) and the watercress. At this point I was getting excited of the things to come and couldn’t wait for the next course.

Next, our second course, was a Pumpkin and Silverbeet Rotolo with Pumpkin Puree, Sage and Pinenut Brown Butter with Manjimup Truffles. Now anyone who knows me could tell you that putting sage and brown butter together for me will almost certainly end up as a favourite of mine, and this was no exception. The pumpkin and silverbeet rotolo, meaning roll in Italian, was perfectly cooked, and combined well with the sage and pinenut brown butter. The whole dish was lifted to another level altogether with the addition of the Manjimup truffles from Southern WA. I could easily have eaten another of this dish quite easily, and my taste buds were in heaven.

The following dish of Rabbit Pie, Chestnut Stuffed Rabbit Loin, Seeded Mustard Mash, and Rabbit Jus was delivered and looked fabulous on the plate. At the end of the plate was the rabbit pie which was moist and well cooked, with a crunchy buttery pastry lid over the ramiken. In the middle a beautifully flavoured rabbit loin stuffed with chestnuts, and on the left mustard mash with vegetables. I didn’t know where to start, or what to finish with for this dish. All three sections were delicious, and were delectable on their own or paired together. This dish was enjoyed by everyone at the table and was mouthwatering to the last morsel.

The last main to arrive was a Rare Venison Leg Fillet with beetroot, chocolate soil, peas, carrots and chocolate jus. An amazing combination and I loved the texture combinations of the chocolate in particular. The venison itself was perfectly cooked, and paired beautifully with the chocolate flavours. I sent the plate back with nothing left on it. Probably my favourite dish of the day, the pairing of meat and chocolate together is something that should definitely occur more often.

Finally, for dessert, we were spoilt with Mandarin and White Chocolate Pannacotta, Pistachio and Mandarin Jelly, Passionfruit Granita, and Pistachio Fairy Floss. This dish was layered and looked fantastic in its glass case, not only that, but together the flavours developed on my palate and was the epitome of how to finish a meal, with light, lingering flavours left in my mouth.

Everything I had at the Silver Spoon was fantastic and, with the special lunch menu on site, it’s the perfect place to visit for a sublime meal in Perth. It was the perfect start to my weekend away in Perth watching Celtic FC be victorious and enjoy the west coast weather. There are some things in life that you can’t live without, good food is one of those, and the Silver Spoon delivers in abundance. Perth locals are very fortunate.
