One of Sydney’s most adventurous and multi-faceted artists, Flutter Lyon, will produce a special collection of new ink-pressed artworks in the private dining room at Newtown eatery, Bloodwood, between Monday 6 – Thursday 9 June 2011. The collection will take shape over the 4-day period. It will be an organic response to the dimensional emotional context abounding in a restaurant space, that plays host to a diversity of human beings every week.
The finished works will be released at a special opening reception with the artist and drinks from 6pm-8pm, Thursday, 9th June and will be on show for three weeks until Thursday, 30th June, with individual works available for sale.
Flutter Lyon will utilise her unique ‘pressing technique’ to encapsulate an abstract visual story, using the simple artistic materials of black ink applied with dental syringes and eye droppers to high quality Italian cotton paper.
Though seemingly abstract on first impression, her ink-pressing works consistently display familiar and real visual elements to the viewer. This project is an exploration of location reactive art that exemplifies characteristics from the setting in which the work is composed. It’s all about exposing the creative process and allowing the general public to step into the world of Flutter Lyon, of a unique, contemporary artist, and find their own place within it.
Patrons will be invited to write down the forms that they may see within the individual works and these interpretations will be collected by Lyon as a part of her ongoing research into human perception and our individual emotional contexts. She is interested in understanding more about the information that influences what our eyes see.

Videos will be posted via Lyon‘s YouTube channel, ViewofCourage, during the week prior to the exhibition and you will see the works coming to life – www.youtube.com/viewofcourage
Flutter Lyon, who in fact also works at the restaurant as a means to fund her own open artist studio in Redfern, will primarily work in the private dining room over the 3-week period and will be available to talk about the work and engage in a dialogue directly with the viewers of the works. Evenings are still available in which to book-out the room if you would like to host a group of friends amongst this unique and exciting project.
The Bloodwood team will be designing a special Flutter Lyon cocktail to be available on the menu throughout the exhibition time: the activation of this sensory element to the visual work, a fascination Flutter has had for the entirety of her artistic career. Come in and try a Flutter Lyon!
The building that houses Bloodwood restaurant has a rich history. In the 1950s it housed a funeral parlour for over ten years. Next the building was renovated and converted to a music recording studio and following that, an art gallery, and then a flower shop, before being converted to the modern restaurant space it is today. Death, creativity, nature, food.
