Getting great Chinese street food is not always the easiest thing to find on the North Shore, but as luck would have it the new Eat Street Precinct in Chatswood has just that. Crazy Wings, in Chatswood, is based on Beijing street style dining, and kao chuan or chinese barbecue skewers. Crazy Wings is set in a stylish restaurant that still provides a laid back feel with fantastically cheerful and helpful staff and a more detailed menu than on show in Haymarket, where you can experience not only the variety of skewers on offer but also a number of soups, salads, noodles and rice as well.
Arriving in a bustling restaurant in the middle of lunchtime my partner and I looked over the menu and decided on a variety of skewers, as skewers are the restaurant’s specialty. We also chose Teriyaki Fried Rice, which was recommended by the staff as a must try on the menu. After ordering our meals we received a receipt on the table for staff to cross off your meals as you receive them to our table.

First to arrive at the table was the Teriyaki Beef Fried Rice, that was recommended by the waitress, and I was told was one of the most popular of the rice dishes on the menu. The Teriyaki Beef Fried Rice was full of flavour, cooked to perfection and was a great dish to share while enjoying the other skewered meats, and dishes that came throughout the rest of the meal.

After only a very short wait we received our first round of skewers. Starting with Orignal and Honey Soy Chicken Wings. The Chicken Wings, the namesake of the restaurant, were skewered and covered in marinade and spices. The flavours and textures of the skewers were fantastic, and although my fingers ended up slightly spiced it was well worth it.

Next to arrive were the Chilli Skewers, and the name did defintely not disappoint. The Chilli wings were again covered in chilli spices, and while I could have handled hotter, the wings themselves were still tasty, flavoursome and consisted of enough heat to make them a worthy of the name.

The Pork Belly arrived shortly after, and I did enjoy the distance between the plates, as I got excited with the arrival of every new dish. The Pork belly arrived next and was devine. I am a fan of pork belly, and the mixture of the asian flavours with the fat of the belly, and the texture of the meat was to die for.

The Chargrill Quail was amazing and probably my favourite dish of the day, the quail came out succulent and moist, yet still contained a textured, flavourful coating of spices which combined beautifully in one mouthful.

By this point in time I was getting full, and I wasn’t sure how many other small dishes I had ordered, but I made room for the next two dishes and was glad that I did. The Chargrill Garlic was amazing, I am a lover of garlic, and although the garlic was not as sweet as a roast garlic, the flavour that came through was full-bodied with a subtle sweet undertone. The texture juxtaposition was also glorious with the slight crunch from the chargrill mixing with the softer, sweeter inside.

The last dish to come out was the Enokitake Mushrooms. These mushrooms were cooked perfectly, and not wanting to share, managed to eat this whole plate by myself (while my partner finished off the fried rice).
Crazy Wings should definitely be added to your list of places to visit. The extended menu makes visiting the Chatswood location worthwhile, and I will be sure to head back shortly to try the other delicious items that my stomach didn’t have room for the first time around.
