Helm Bar and Bistro is a great spot to look out over Darling Harbour Sydney, have a drink and if you’re hungry have a bite to eat. It’s opened 7 days with daily specials. Our visit on Thursday night was $19.95 “All You Can Eat Mussels” $5 Schooners of Pure Blonde.
Although my dining companion and I shared a scrumptious seafood stand for two, we couldn’t resist also trying some mussels. We were also pleasantly surprised about price and value. At $70 the pictured seafood stand included Morton Bay Bugs, Tiger Prawns, Musslels, Battered Fish of the Day (ours was Kingfish), Scallops Octopus and fries. All were good but my favourite on the stand was the moist and delicious chargrilled bugs.
As it was Thursday the daily all you can eat special was Australain Black Mussels served in Traditional Belgium Pots and sides of fries. The three choices offered were Mariniere White Wine, Onion and Parsley Thai Ginger, Chilli, Coriander, Lemongrass & Coconut Milk and Blue Cheese with White Wine. We didn’t try them all but were intrigued by the surprise of the day : the Mussels with Blue Cheese. We tried them to see what they were like. Serendepity. The flavour combitation worked really well. The depth of flavour of the mussels was balanced almost magically by the thin blue cheese flavoured liquor. Helm did the mussels justice. They were plump and moist.
The idea of blue cheese with mussels is new to me, and (I’ll admit) unexpectedly very delicious, so I thought I’d do a bit of research. I’m not sure but it seems that it is a traditional Belgium combination. While I wasn’t sure how it would work in theory, it does actually work really really well.
I loved the combo so much, I’m going to try this recipe by Sydney food blogger Morsels and Musings at home : mussels w spinach leeks & blue cheese
And I’m sure I’ll also be back at Helm Bar & Bistro sometime soon.
