Travel Australia: Pretty Beach House

Finding Pretty Beach House, made me feel a bit like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. It took me a while to realise, but … there’s no place like (my Aussie) home!

I’ve travelled to many countries, and often in style, and must admit I have a bit of a taste for luxury. Finding Pretty Beach House, was pure serendipity. This is an Australian luxury retreat: with tasteful Australian influenced design, fantastic service, limited guest numbers, and just a couple of hours from home. And, most importantly, perfect food by Chef Stefano Manfredi. Now, all I have to do is hope that I can get a booking when I want to go, because I’ve already told so many people about it …

The patina of old leather, original Australian paintings by artists like John Olsen and Arthur Boyd, the juxtaposition of glazed Hill End pottery with antique bone-handled silver flatware, a dried Australian native enclosed in the welcome letter are just some of the pieces that make up the luxurious whole.

A cosy fire to warm my pavillion, a spacious shower in which to get lost, big generous white soft fluffy towels, a private pool and day bed, and iPod music in the room personally selected by Chef Stefano Manfredi, the peaceful bush setting, all aided rest and relaxation.

With my personal focus on food however, satisfying my precious palate is the number one priority. Iced chai on arrival created the perfect first impression. House clotted cream, eggs and produce grown at the sister property Bells, and the freshest seasonal fruit, were my choice for starting each day in my culinary heaven. Outdoor ‘bush’ dining for the lunchtime selection of Manfredi’s amazing woodfired oven pizzas were accompanied by treetop (and sometimes swooping) kookaburras.

I’m counting the days until I go back. Although I’ll be sure to steal another long weekend away at some stage, the next visit won’t be for the boutique accommodation. I’m definitely going again soon just for the food! The first event of the Pretty Beach House Seasonal Program for 2010 – The Chiara Boschis Barola Dinner is marked (penned not pencilled) in my calendar.

Resembles heaven to me! There is only one house I know that has the same resonance. Susan Duncan’s home on the national park side of Pittwater. Dorothea McKellar’s original house, high amongst sentinel gums, in Indian colonial style with deep, cool verandahs. You can see it in her fabulous book A Life on Pittwater with pics by Anthony Wong. A book you want to hold close forever.
